French Film Festival

We're thinking that this could be a good way to kick off our inaugural Film Club meeting.

Good idea, non?

Pride & Prejudice & Zombies (Minutes: 03/02/10)

Wow, what a night! First meeting of the year was officially a success… where to begin?

We ate: mixed antipasto plate & cheese platters. The taramasalata was a hit (Potts Point Deli on Macleay St, for those who wanted to know)
We drank: Prosecco + orange juice

We discussed: Pride & Prejudice & Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith (& Jane Austen)

We got off to kind of a late start because Tranny & Allison got distracted by a naked man in Elizabeth Bay.

The PPZ discussion began… Jo was scared of the pictures, Tranny found it hilarious. Anna thought it was dull & boring. Lucy was glad to revisit an old favourite.

We all agreed that we loved that the Bennet sisters became fighting machines! And that they could probably fight ok in their gowns because they were wearing empire lines & not corsets in those days!

The discussion turned to what the Zombies really represented – corruption & evil in society. Anna noted that this was a popular theme in Zombie literature.

Overall, we felt it didn’t quite hit the mark – great concept, not so well executed.

Scores:
Tran: 6.5/10
Sims: 6.5/10
Ingrid: 7/10
Lucy: 6/10
Jo: 6/10
Anna: 2/10
Eb: 4/10
Average score: 5.4/10

Next, Tranny set the bar high with her presentation of the 3 book options (Tranny, can you send out the soft copy if you have it?). In true Dadic form, she had read them all.

We decided on The Book Thief – Markus Zusak. I’m very excited about this one! We have 6 weeks to read it, so I will send out a calendar invitation shortly. The next meeting will be held at Ingrid’s house, and the next book will be chosen by Anna.

We discussed some famous literary hoaxes & the JT LeRoy story. For those who wanted to know more, you can find out here:

We also took a moment to remember JD Salinger who died last week & reflect on The Catcher in the Rye.

Lastly, we decided to start Film Club! This will occur 3 weeks after our book club meetings to break up the 6 week gap. I will also send out a meeting request for this. Film Club will be a combination of DVDs at home & also going to the cinema. It was decided that the first one would be at the movies.
